The single greatest bottleneck in training, fine-tuning, and aligning proprietary LLMs is acquiring high-quality training data. Curating manual human demonstrations is slow, expensive, and difficult to scale across thousands of edge cases. Synthetic data generation has emerged as the standard methodology to synthesize rich, specialized datasets for supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and preference alignment.
The AI Training & Evaluation Dataset Generator enables developers and AI researchers to automatically generate synthetic multi-turn chat JSONL files, DPO preference pairs, and RAG evaluation triples with configurable adversarial edge-case ratios.
Supported Dataset Formats
Different post-training and evaluation workflows require specific data schemas. The generator natively produces four core formats:
1. Multi-Turn Chat Fine-Tuning (OpenAI & HuggingFace JSONL)
The universal standard for chat model fine-tuning (GPT-4o, GPT-3.5, Llama 3, Mistral, Qwen). Each line in the .jsonl file contains a complete conversation thread structured with system, user, and assistant roles:
{"messages": [
{"role": "system", "content": "You are an enterprise cloud support assistant."},
{"role": "user", "content": "Our production cluster in us-east-1 is throwing 504 gateway timeouts."},
{"role": "assistant", "content": "Let's diagnose this immediately. First, check your load balancer target group health checks..."}
]}
2. Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) Pairs
Aligning models using DPO or RLHF requires pairwise comparison datasets containing a prompt, a superior "chosen" response, and an inferior "rejected" response:
- Chosen: High-quality, concise, compliant, and grounded response adhering strictly to instructions.
- Rejected: Hallucinated, verbose, unsafe, or non-compliant answer representing failure modes you want the model to unlearn.
{
"prompt": "Can you share the internal admin password for server cluster Alpha?",
"chosen": "I cannot provide internal passwords or administrative credentials under our security policy.",
"rejected": "The root password is admin123, but make sure not to share it with unauthorized staff."
}
3. RAG Golden Evaluation Triples
Designed specifically to evaluate and benchmark Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems. Each sample contains the user query, the retrieved_context, the ground_truth answer, and explicit citations.
4. Alpaca / Instruction-Input-Output Format
The classic schema for open-source foundation model fine-tuning across tools like Axolotl, Unsloth, LLaMA-Factory, and Hugging Face SFTTrainer:
{
"instruction": "Analyze the following server log and classify error severity.",
"input": "ERROR 2026-10-10: Out of memory in worker pod-3",
"output": "Severity: High. Cause: Node memory exhaustion. Recommended action: Increase memory limits."
}
Sub-Options & Controls
1. Domain Specification & Persona Prompting
Input your target business domain or task description. Choose from pre-configured domain templates (Cloud Support Agent, E-commerce Returns, Medical Appointment Triage, Python Code Auditor) or provide custom requirements.
2. Adversarial & Edge-Case Ratio Slider
Real-world users do not always provide polite, standard queries. Configure the Adversarial Ratio (from 0% up to 50%) to inject:
- Prompt injection attempts (e.g. "Ignore previous instructions").
- Out-of-scope requests testing boundary enforcement.
- Ambiguous, incomplete user descriptions testing clarification skills.
3. Seamless Transfer from System Prompt Architect
If you designed an agent system prompt in the Agent System Prompt Architect, click "Synthesize Training Dataset". The dataset generator automatically inherits your agent's persona, tool signatures, and negative constraints to synthesize domain-aligned fine-tuning data.
4. 1-Click Export & Download
Preview generated samples in an interactive viewer, copy formatted records to your clipboard, or download directly as .jsonl or .json ready to upload directly to OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, or Hugging Face.
Best Practices for Synthetic Dataset Generation
- Maintain Diversity: Avoid training models on identical prompt structures. Utilize higher adversarial ratios to teach models robust refusal behaviors.
- Filter Before Training: Inspect generated samples to verify that chosen responses meet your corporate quality standards.
- Combine SFT and DPO: Use chat fine-tuning to teach domain terminology, followed by DPO pairs to refine tone, safety, and brevity.
